Pharmacy First Cambridge’s Milton Road Pharmacy
Milton Road Pharmacy now offers a range of NHS services known as ‘Pharmacy First’.
Pharmacists can provide advice and NHS-funded treatment (prescription charge/ exemption apply), where clinically appropriate, for seven conditions:
- sinusitis
- sore throat
- acute otitis media
- infected insect bite
- impetigo
- shingles
- uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) in women.
Patients who wish to use any of the above services can walk into the pharmacy and request consultation with the pharmacist (subject to a trained pharmacist being present).
What are the age restrictions for each service?
- sinusitis: adult and children over 12 years of age.
- sore throat: adults and children over 5 years of age.
- acute otitis media: children and young adults ages 1 to 17.
- infected insect bite: adults and children over 1.
- impetigo: adults and children over 1.
- shingles: adults aged 18 and over.
- uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) in women: women aged 16-64.
Service for the above conditions outside the set age group will not be provided.
Will I get medication to treat my symptoms?
Pharmacists will adhere to a stringent clinical protocol that encompasses guidance on self-care and precautionary measures on the above seven conditions. They will also have the authority to provide a limited selection of prescription-only medications (for example prescription-only antibiotics) , if deemed suitable, without the requirement for a general practitioner consultation.
Pharmacy First: Will I have to pay for my medication?
Standard prescription fees will be in effect for the seven frequently encountered conditions. Those who previously qualified for prescription charge exemptions will continue to maintain their exempt status.
